What is a dog training invoice?
A dog training invoice should describe a program, not a transaction. Training is sold in packages because behaviour change takes repetition, and an invoice that lists "6 sessions — $780" without saying what the six sessions cover leaves the client counting hours instead of watching progress.
Board-and-train is the highest-value product in this field and the most misunderstood. Two weeks of boarding with training built in involves daily sessions, housing, feeding, enrichment and — critically — the handover lessons that teach the owner to maintain the work. Itemise all of it, or the client compares your two-week price to a kennel's.
The other half of the document is expectations. Training outcomes depend on the owner's follow-through, so no invoice should promise results. State what was delivered, what the maintenance plan is, and what support is included afterwards. Written that way, the invoice is also the thing that gets the client to keep doing the homework.
What to include
Everything below is already in the generator above — this is what each part is for.
Dog and owner details
Dog's name, breed, age, and the owner or handler being billed.
Program or package
What was purchased — package of sessions, board-and-train weeks, or a class term.
Sessions delivered
Dates and durations, with the focus of each session where it helps.
Board-and-train inclusions
Boarding nights, daily training sessions, feeding and enrichment, and handover lessons.
Behaviour consult
Initial assessment length, written behaviour plan and any veterinary referral note.
Included follow-up
Post-program check-ins, phone or video support, and the window they are valid in.
Three steps to a finished PDF
Enter the dog and the program
Dog, owner, and whether this is a package, a board-and-train or a class term.
Itemise sessions and inclusions
Sessions with dates, boarding nights, handover lessons and follow-up support.
Download and send
Download the PDF with the maintenance plan in the notes and send it at handover.
Packages, board-and-train and getting paid up front
Sell packages, not sessions
One-off sessions are bad for the dog and bad for the business: no continuity, no cash flow, and a client who stops before the behaviour changes. Price a four or six-session package at a small discount to the single rate, bill it in advance, and set expiry terms so the calendar does not fill with unused credit from eighteen months ago.
Show what a board-and-train actually contains
- Boarding nights, daily training sessions and handling time.
- Feeding, enrichment and any special care the dog required.
- The handover lessons — usually two — that transfer the work to the owner.
Price behaviour consults for the expertise
Aggression, separation distress and reactivity cases are assessment work, not obedience. They involve history-taking, a written plan, sometimes coordination with a veterinarian, and considerable liability. Charge a consult fee that reflects the written deliverable, invoice it separately from any training that follows, and note where veterinary involvement was recommended.
Take payment before the program starts
Packages and board-and-train are billed in full in advance, or half at booking and half at drop-off. The slot is reserved, the dog is housed and the work is front-loaded. Publish a cancellation window for board-and-train — usually fourteen days — because a boarding place unfilled at short notice is revenue that cannot be recovered.
Three mistakes that delay payment
Billing session by session
It breaks continuity and cash flow. Package it and bill in advance.
Board-and-train as a single price
It looks like expensive boarding. Itemise nights, daily sessions, enrichment and handover lessons.
Promising outcomes on the invoice
Behaviour depends on the owner's follow-through. Describe what was delivered and the maintenance plan instead.
