What is a roofing invoice?
A roofing invoice bills for work on a roof and, more often than in any other trade, it is read by an insurance company rather than the homeowner. Storm damage work is paid from a claim, which means the invoice has to line up with an adjuster’s scope and reference the claim number.
The unit of roofing is the square — 100 square feet — and pricing is normally per square for tear-off and installation, plus itemised materials, decking repairs, flashing, vents and disposal. Listing those separately is what allows a supplement to be approved when the roof turns out to be worse than the scope assumed.
Everything else follows standard trades practice: labor split from materials, permits passed through, warranty stated. Roofing warranties matter unusually much, because there are two of them — the manufacturer’s on the shingles and yours on the workmanship.
What to include
Everything below is already in the generator above — this is what each part is for.
License, insurance and business details
Your company, license number and insurance details — homeowners and adjusters both look for them.
Property and roof scope
The address, roof area in squares, pitch and layers removed. This is the basis of every number below it.
Tear-off and installation per square
Priced per square with the count as quantity, so the arithmetic is visible to an adjuster.
Materials, itemised
Shingles, underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge, ridge vent and fasteners with quantities.
Decking, flashing and extras
Sheathing replacement, chimney and wall flashing, boots and pipe collars — the classic supplement items.
Claim reference and warranties
Insurance claim and adjuster details, plus the manufacturer warranty and your workmanship warranty.
Three steps to a finished PDF
Enter property and scope
Your company and license, the homeowner, the property, and the claim number in the notes field.
Bill squares, materials and disposal
Tear-off and install per square, then materials, decking, flashing and dumpster fees on their own lines.
Download and submit
Download the PDF and send it to the homeowner and, where the work is claim-funded, to the adjuster with photos.
Roofing and insurance-funded work
Match the adjuster’s scope line for line
Claim-funded roofs are approved against a written scope. When your invoice uses the same units and the same items, the payment is administrative. When it uses a lump sum, someone has to reconcile it, and that person is not in a hurry.
Document supplements as you find them
- Rotten decking, extra layers and code-required upgrades are normal and normally payable — with photographs.
- Photograph before, during and after, and reference the photo set on the invoice.
- Submit supplements while the crew is still on site; retroactive claims are far harder.
Stage the money
Roofing consumes material cost up front. A deposit on contract signing, a draw at material delivery and the balance on completion is standard, and on insurance work it usually mirrors the carrier’s own two-payment structure — an initial payment and a release of depreciation once the work is verified complete.
State both warranties clearly
The manufacturer covers the shingles; you cover the workmanship. Give the length of each on the invoice, and note whether the manufacturer warranty requires registration — an unregistered enhanced warranty is a promise the homeowner does not actually have.
Three mistakes that delay payment
Lump-sum claim invoices
A single figure cannot be matched to an adjuster’s scope and delays the release of funds.
Undocumented supplements
Extra decking without photographs and a written request is extra decking you paid for.
Warranty left vague
“Fully warranted” protects nobody and sells nothing.
